Love is … – Feb 11

By Deborah Sherlly Yusuf

In the world where the true definition of love is lost within the realm of illusion, desires and chemistry (thanks to Hollywood), it is highly important that we, as children of the most high God, understand its truest and purest form. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 explain beautifully what love is all about.

First and foremost, love is patient…

Wow! How’s that for a start?! The first thing that the Bible teaches about love gets right into the core of our problem! Too many times we want love to be instant. More often than not, we complain when we have to wait. And sadly, so many of us lose self control in the face of hardship. Why? Because we’re impatient.

Imagine sitting in a three-course dinner. The chef had carefully put together the menu, and making sure that each meal is served with perfection. From the first bite of the savoury entrée, to the warm and hearty main and finally to the sweet dessert – each is created and prepared to be enjoyed separately so that we can gain a full satisfaction out of the experience. Now imagine all three courses mixed together. Yuck!

Friends, a very wise king once said “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Contrary to what the society is telling us, love can’t be rushed. The apostle Paul understood that amongst so many other things, love requires patience. There are seasons attached to love –a season of friendship, a season of praying, a season of courting [I personally believe that the courting doesn’t stop when you get married. This season continues until the day we meet the Lord face to face] and finally a season of intimacy. Just like the three-course dinner, if we rush and mix them together, we’ll find ourselves facing a “yucky” situation.

Proverbs 16:32 describes a patient person as better than warrior, and a person with self control better than one who conquers a city.

Friends, we are destined for great things and to be patient in the matters of love is one key to exercise greatness. To love and be loved is God’s idea – all we need to do to enjoy love is to trust Him and obey His commands.

“Better a patient man than a

warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city” Proverbs 16:32
