Drops of Wisdom! – Mar 15

By Poppy Ivone

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

-Proverbs 4:7

King Solomon, a man gifted with unsurpassed riches and wisdom, penned the above, plainly stating which of the two he valued more. As the saying goes, wisdom is the wealth of the wise.

How to beget wisdom?!

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. -James 1:5-6

True wisdom comes from God and it is ours for the asking, in faith.

How to impart wisdom to our children?!

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. -Deuteronomy 11:18-21

The action keywords here are ‘teach’, ‘talk’ and ‘write’ and it seems to me that the drip-method is to be used. Just like beads of water that drips onto a rock and slowly make an indelible impression on the surface, this method taps into the power of slow, incremental progress over long periods of time. The Bible directs us parents to be constant in reminding our children about God’s words and talking about them as we go about our daily lives. Why so? Because we humans are a forgetful lot! Yet like the rock, even the hardest of hearts would yield to bear the everlasting imprints of Godly wisdom when it is continually exposed to God’s words.

What is the goal of this wisdom? 2 Timothy 3:14-17 says it is to one day make our

children wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus that they may be complete,

equipped for every good work. There is no better legacy to bestow on our precious ones!

God’s way of teaching wisdom requires many years commitment, patience, perseverance, unwavering consistency. And our children are totally worth it.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

-Proverbs 22:6

(as observed by the same wise king)
